A life-changing, perspective altering, eye-opening, adventure-filled 5 months Past Review

By (Environmental Studies., Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/22/2013 to 06/08/2013 with

CIEE: Cape Town - Arts and Sciences

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I can't really put into words everything I learned abroad. It was an amazing opportunity to live in a part of the world that most people never get to see. It was really a perspective changing 5 months that was completely worthwhile and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes that I chose were interesting, but the educational experience was different because we had much less interaction with our professors and the final exams were much heavily weighted (50%). There was less academic guidance, and our whole grade was based on a few assignment. It was not as rigorous as Middlebury.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program was helpful with planning events and giving us general advice

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was in pretty bad shape and had cockroaches, and the program didn't really help us with that. Some of the houses were a lot better quality than the place I lived in.

* Food:

We were in charge of our own food

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I think that volunteering was very important in Cape Town because that gave me the most exposure/integration with local culture. I would really recommend volunteering to future students.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never needed healthcare when I was abroad, but people who did were pretty much on their own- the program didn't really help us with that

* Safety:

I did not think safety was an issue, but people who were not smart found themselves in some bad situations. All about common sense

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Cape Town is a relatively inexpensive city especially compared to the US. I was able to budget effectively and not spend very much money.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About $50-$75

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Xhosa

Course Department: Language
Instructor:
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This language course was the best class I took at University of Cape Town. There is a huge population of Xhosa speakers in Cape Town and it allowed me to communicate better with the kids when I was volunteering. The class was challenging but not unreasonable, and the instructor was very friendly and made it fun.
Credit Transfer Issues: It satisfied Middlebury's language requirement for abroad
Course Name/Rating:

Crime and Deviance in South African Cities

Course Department: Sociology/Law
Instructor:
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was very interesting. Crime is a huge topic in South Africa and in Cape Town, and it was very interesting to study and analyze it. I really recommend this course for future students. This course, like others at UCT, had several lecturers who specialize in certain topics, so we would have a different teacher every few weeks which was different from Middlebury.

Advanced South African Politics

Course Department: Political Science
Instructor:
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was extremely challenging as an American student. It was rather easy for the South Africans in the class because they have a general knowledge of the political party system/ history of their country, but coming in with basically no background knowledge made it difficult. I learned a lot in it though and it was pretty interesting considering the political history of South Africa.
