What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes yes yes. This is an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. It has been eye-opening, as well as ENDLESS fun. 6 months here and still not a dull moment.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload by US University standards is quite easy. Courses are taught in large lectures, which are easy to give a miss. Most of one's grade is determined by the final exam and one large paper.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Liesbeeck Gardens is the dorm that nobody at UCT wants to live in for a reason. It's kind of a hole. Nevertheless, everyone who gets to live here would not have it any other way. Socially, this is the best way to meet people, including tons of locals. The location is great, near some awesome restaurants. Not the nicest place, but a great time.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Safety:

Safety is not as big an issue as you may have heard. Look after yourself, travel in a pack (this is a good excuse to be social in the first weeks), and don't put yourself in situations where you can be taken advantage of. The people here are friendly and love to help, so just be vigilant.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? This is perfect for someone who can just as easily be part of a large group as well as operating on his/her own. Maintain an open mind about what you may see and just roll with it when things don't work as you expected (and they inevitably will).
