Broadreach: Program at Sea - Caribbean Grenadines Advanced Scuba Voyage

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
In my opinion, this was the best way to spend 3 weeks. I am a certified PADI Master Diver, I have a group of friends that I will stay in touch with forever, and I have a renewed sense of who I am.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I think that the academic rigor of this experience was exactly what I was expecting. Something that I was surprised at was how athletically challenging the already academically difficult Rescue Diver course was.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

This trip was quite possibly the highlight of my young life. In my two years with Broadreach, I have been amazed at how the instructors manage to keep such a stable balance between safety and adventure and between fun and education. Living in this kind of group environment has really helped me grow as a person and learn a lot about myself. I was thrilled to find a group of people I still consider to be family.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living on a boat is difficult, but it is also very rewarding and a unique experience in that you are living in the environment you are also studying in, so stewardship is very important.

* Food:

Since there were many fruit vendors on the islands, the food was often fresh and local.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

This isn't really a fair question because we were not living on land, so there wasn't really a way to be that immersed in the local culture. However, I can say with confidence that when we did go on land, none of us felt like tourists.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had a moderate ear infection on my program, and it was handled very very well. As soon as I noticed a little bit of pain, an instructor took me to a local doctor. I was told not to dive for the next five days. We went back to a different doctor about 4 days later to see if I was cleared to dive. Both times I was given prescriptions for antibiotics, and Broadreach handled both the doctor's visit and the pharmaceutical products very well. Going to the doctors' offices was also a very culturally eye-opening experience. I believe that Broadreach does truly go above and beyond when it comes to safety and healthcare.

* Safety:

Safety is the first concern on these trips, so students are made well aware of potential dangers, which I think set us up for success.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

This program changed the way I think about a lot of things, and has helped me to deal with conflict and confronting difficulties in my life.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Since this trip was only 3 weeks, I only spend about 60 USD.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $20
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Bring small bills. Definitely nothing over $20's.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Networker
An active student leader, it was important for you to network abroad as well. Once overseas, you sought out student clubs, volunteered with local organizations, or attended community events. You encouraged your friends join you, and often considered how you could reflect your international experiences in a resume.
