Brigham Young University: London - London Study Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was absolutely worthwhile! I can't even begin to list what I learned abroad. History really did come to life for me over there; I especially gained respect for those who fought in the wars. Just seeing all the destruction that was around the city left over from WWII gave me chills.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Though the classes may not have been my most difficult classes ever, being where history was made was unforgettable and priceless. The feeling of being where wars were fought, lives were lost, and legends originated taught me more than any textbook ever could

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They were fantastic! Always willing to help us out and were on top of everything that needed to be done.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The food was excellent! Every night was something new and delicious!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Overall, I felt pretty safe. During the day I felt fine going out by myself, and at night I always went with other people. I always kept my purse zipped close to me to prevent pick-pocketing, but I never really felt it a problem.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Once we got to London to stay, it was pretty easy to stay on a small budget. While traveling the Continent, though, and having to pay for all meals, it was a little pricey, or more so than I expected.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $50

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The day trips around the UK
  • All the history in the city
* What could be improved?
  • Honestly, nothing really.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have known how easy it would be to just go out and about the city by myself. I wish I would've been more brave to go out sooner in the program. I saw a lot of stuff in London, but there are little things, like all the parks, that I wish I would've gone to see, even by myself.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
