About

Learn the language and do community service with local nonprofit organizations to serve underprivileged citizens, while gaining insight into all levels of the local society!

Participating in community service with BridgeAbroad allows students to have an exceptionally meaningful experience abroad. Students will have the opportunity to work together with local community members who are trying to make a difference in the lives of those who may be less fortunate than others. This component is important to help deepen students’ intercultural experience, broaden their perspective on local societal issues, and challenge them to reflect on their own role as a global citizen.

Students will be placed within local community centers and asked to help with a range of activities, from serving meals to the poor to caring for disadvantaged children. Often, students are asked to organize educational activities for community members, or sports activities for children. Sometimes, there are small maintenance tasks to do like painting or fixing a leaky roof.

Many of the people who need the services of the community centers have never been in contact with someone from the United States, and truly enjoy the experience of getting to know a foreigner. Students have the opportunity to put their language skills to work in an authentic context, all the while lending a hand and helping out. The contributions made by students are very much appreciated by the hosting non-profit organization, and the experience leaves everyone involved with a new perspective on life.

These service activities can be an intense experience for students who may have never been in close contact with people from a disadvantaged background. Our experience has taught us the importance of a balance between hands-on work and time for reflection. We recommend a weekly feedback and reflection meeting to allow students to share their experiences while doing community service, and to talk about and begin to process certain emotions that may arise as a result of being exposed to a very different reality often found in under-developed countries.

Why do Community Service in Argentina?

Although historically a prosperous country, Argentina has faced severe economic struggles in the last decade. These difficult financial times have led to a large disparity between rich and poor and to a host of newfound social problems. Even Argentines who were once part of a solid middle class now live in poverty, with limited access to education, health care, and profitable employment.

Participants in Argentina will not only help make a difference in the lives of Argentines, but will also get an unparalleled opportunity to learn more about the nation’s history, culture, society, and language by interacting with its citizens in a unique and meaningful way.
