Boston University: London - London Internship Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about myself while traveling and realized that I am capable of being completely independent. I learned so much about different cultures and met so many fantastic people.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I took mostly health and psychology classes. The classes were all very interesting. We went on a lot of field trips which included Sigmound Freud's house, museums, and visiting health service programs. I learned a lot about British culture and how psychology is received in the UK. However, the classes were not challenging.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was in a room with two other roommates. We each had a closet and drawers under our beds. The program provided bedding and there was a bathroom in our room. However, the windows in our room did not open and were frosted so you could not see out. We were also placed across from the Staff room. They were extremely noisy in the mornings and I often did not get good sleep. There are kitchens on each floor but the pans provided were terrible and there was 9 or more students to a kitchen.

* Food:

I cooked all of my own food and there was none provided by my program

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I had a fantastic time in London. I meet a lot of locals through my internship and had great discussions with them. I met a lot of interesting people on my trip and learned a lot about British culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have major issues with health but it was easy to find medicines that I needed such as pain relievers, cold medicines, and allergy medicine.

* Safety:

The place we lived was extremely safe. I never felt unsafe walking home at night and I never heard of any problems in the neighborhood.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I saved a lot of money before going on this program and ended up spending nearly all of it. London is very expensive, especially if you want to travel.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook for yourself and keep a journal to help you budget.
