Boston University: London - London Internship Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was more challenging and faster than I thought it would be but the teachers were accomadating and understood you were there for the whole abroad experience. Definitely learned a lot of new things.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The housing policy was strict for the people that tried to use it properly and flawed and easy to get around for those who snuck around it- moral dilema. The staff was fine and there but not the most warm, hovering people (which may be good- forces you to acclimate?).

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Triple, shared a big common room/kitchen with 9 other people.

Great South Kensington location, modern accomadations. Lots of people in the building to meet.

* Food:

Made a lot of pasta because it was cheap and easy.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Had a security guard at the door at all times- they sometimes slacked. But needed a code, to get past the security guard, and a key to get to your room so always felt safe. The area, South Kensington, that we were in is very safe/wealthy- but people shouldnt get too comfortable with that- you are in a city and should travel with at least one other person at night. Close hospitals- had to take friend who was visiting to one at 11pm on a weeknight- had no troubles. Very high medical standards it seemed.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Take what they tell you to prepare for money and add on about $1,500 more to be safe.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It was the right program for me- great combo of classes, social time, and internship. I got the most out of the friendships/bonds I made and the confidence I gained.
