Santiago de Compostela is world-famous as the culmination point of the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. The Cathedral is an architectural wonder to behold and dates to 1075. It was built to enshrine the tomb that holds the purported remains of St. James the Apostle. The city is of both political and historical importance. It is the capital of Galicia in Northwestern Spain and the old town of this medieval city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is surrounded by mountains, verdant countryside and is only a short drive from the striking Atlantic coast. Excursions include walking a portion of the Camino de Santiago, visiting the Atlantic coastal villages and natural areas, and exploring historic cities such as Lugo. Housing is with carefully selected homestays or in university residence halls.
