Florence: The Experience of a Lifetime Past Review

By (Theatre/Art History, The University of Texas at Austin) for

Arcadia: Florence - Accademia Italiana Florence

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. I've always wanted to study in Italy, and my experience was unforgettable and unique. There are some things that I would have liked to change, but that is the case with any program that you do. I am more independent and cultured because of it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teachers are very laid back, you have to motivate yourself to come to class and do the work. The lecture style is also very different. In most but not all cases it's mostly listening to the teacher lecture for 3 hours.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration faculty were very helpful and friendly. They were always willing to help with academic and non-academic concerns.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was beautiful, spacious, and in an incredible location. It was in the heart of the city, next to all of the city's most important sights and nightlife. It was also a short distance from school. The biggest issue that I had was that our wireless internet would go out pretty often.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The weekend trips that my program took were enjoyable, but besides that they did not offer much socially. I would have liked for the program to have more activities to get to know local people.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

As far as my experience went, Florence was a very safe city. I walked fairly often by myself at night and never had a problem. I did not have any health issues while abroad, but a couple of friends did and the program took good care of them.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Italian 612
Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced mostly in my Italian class and very occasionally with random strangers. It's hard to improve your language skills with the Arcadia program in Florence because your classes are with all Americans and you live with Americans. Also, most people in Florence speak English, so you have to be determined to speak Italian with them even when they speak back to you in English.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

History of Tuscany

Course Department:
Instructor: Niccolo Capponi
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was the best class offered in the program and was the study abroad class of my dreams. Niccolo is an incredible teacher and such an intelligent man. He really cares about challenging his students and getting them to think in a way that is completely different than the way we are taught here in the states. He took us all over the city to places you wouldn't normally go, and I was always excited to go to his class and to talk to him outside of class.

Photographing Florence

Course Department:
Instructor: Annalisa Savoca
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The class was good but a little disappointing. Because there was no requirement for a certain camera, there was no way to teach everybody how to use their specific cameras. It was a good way to learn the very basics of photography, though.

Michelangelo Life and Works

Course Department:
Instructor: Monica Shenouda
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Professoressa Shenouda is very knowledgeable about art history and Michelangelo specifically, however her teaching skills were disappointing to me. I am an art history major and love Michelangelo but found myself bored a lot. She is a nice woman and cares about her students and their progress, but she doesn't seem comfortable talking in front of a group of people which makes it hard for her to grab attention. On the upside, the class takes you to lots of cool places to look at amazing artworks.

Italian Cinema

Course Department:
Instructor: Franco Fiesoli
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Professore Fiesoli knows everything there is to know about Italian cinema and a lot about other countries' film world. I probably learned the most in the class out of all of the courses I took. The only downside is that Fiesoli lectures for the entire 3 hours and only shows short clips of the films he talks about. I definitely have a great appreciation for Italian cinema now.

Advanced Italian

Course Department:
Instructor: Monica Parigi
Instruction Language: Italian
Comments: Monica is a great teacher who pushes you to speak Italian and wants you to fully grasp the language. There was a decent amount of coursework and a few tests, but nothing too difficult to keep up with. Lectures were a bit unorganized, but it was a nice break from your typical language course.
