About
Founded over 60 years ago, University of the Western Cape (UWC) played a critical role in the history of South Africa’s transformation, and maintains a mission devoted to access, equity, and inclusion, with a commitment to excellence in teaching, learning and research.
Its proud history in the liberation struggle distinguishes its academic role in fostering cultural diversity and in seeking creative solutions to a transitioning society’s needs.
Synonymous with student activism and politics, the University is also well known for its academic strengths in humanities, law, health sciences and nursing. It’s home to 23,000 undergraduate and graduate students in seven faculties, and maintains international partnerships from all over the world.
Located in the Cape Town suburbs, about fifteen miles from the city, the campus includes a nature reserve and mountain vistas to the east and west. Access to student clubs and societies and outdoor activities will round out your campus experience, while Arcadia program components will help you reflect on your experience in South Africa in a holistic and insightful way. The Arcadia Cornerstone Course, South Africa: History, Politics, and Culture, features associated co-curricular excursions and is taken alongside other South African program students. You’ll also take 3-4 courses at UWC.
