Fun, exciting, and memorable January 05, 2024

By (Middlebury College) - abroad from 07/06/2023 to 11/14/2023 with

Arcadia: Auckland - University of Auckland

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think I gained a lot of self-confidence and an appreciation for independence while I was abroad. I feel more capable about traveling on my own and navigating transport outside of the U.S. I also have a greater appreciation for the South Pacific, particularly from my Pacific Biogeography and Biodiversity course. If given the chance, I would absolutely go back to New Zealand.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in Carlaw Park with three other flatmates. The space itself was really nice with a kitchen, bathroom, and living room. Location was also close to campus. However, my flatmates weren't the best and you don't get to choose who you live with. Overall, it was a good experience though.

* Food:

There is no meal plan provided so I was responsible for shopping and cooking for myself.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Kiwis are generally really friendly. It wasn't super easy to make friends in class thought, so I highly recommend joining a club if you want to meet locals. In my experience, the clubs that I was interested in were expensive to join, so I relied on the other students in the Arcadia program as my main group of friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I thought Arcadia did a wonderful job supporting me during my time abroad. I was thankful to have people who were easily accessible and could help me with any questions I had. I was also very thankful to have the rest of the Arcadia group to rely on and spend time with. I made a lot of friends from various schools who were all experiencing NZ with me. The trips organized by Arcadia were also really well done. For orientation, we went to Rotorua and enjoyed the geothermal activity and Maori culture. For the mid-semester trip, we went caving in Waitomo and surfing in Raglan.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $60 USD
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be prepared to cook for yourself. Have some good recipes ready to go, and look for ways to meal prep.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The experience.
  • The support.
  • The friends.
* What could be improved?
  • Flatmates
  • Accessibility of clubs
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If I could do it over again, I think I would have made more of an effort to join the kayaking club at UoA. The cost of the club made me hesitate to commit, but I think it would have been worth it to make Kiwi friends and experience white water kayaking in NZ.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Animal Behavior

Course Department: Biosciences
Instructor: Kristal Cain
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Fun, interesting course. Lectures were engaging, and it was nice to have several different lecturers throughout the semester. Coursework was easy and felt similar to an introductory bio course at Midd.
Credit Transfer Issues: No
Course Name/Rating:

Greek Philosophy

Course Department: Philosophy
Instructor: Chris Martin
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was generally very boring. The subject matter itself can be interesting depending on the lecturer but I found that Professor Martin was not very engaging. There was minimal coursework with only one big essay due mid-semester worth 40% and a final exam worth 60% of the final grade.
Credit Transfer Issues: No
Course Name/Rating:

Ethics and Justice

Course Department: Philosophy
Instructor: Matheson Russell
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The topics covered in this course were really interesting. I particularly enjoyed the lectures given by Krushil Watene and Michael Dimetrius. There were biweekly short write-ups that were somewhat tedious since grades were given without any feedback. I would have expected more supportive commentary for an introductory philosophy course because I wasn't always sure what TAs were looking for in my work.
Credit Transfer Issues: No
Course Name/Rating:

Pacific Biogeography and Biodiversity

Course Department: Biosciences
Instructor: Shane Wright
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Fabulous course. A lot of information provided in each lecture, but the subject matter was quite interesting. Labs were engaging and easy, but lab write ups were detailed and took time. Overall, a challenging course because of the sheer amount of subject matter covered, but definitely worth taking.
Credit Transfer Issues: None
