Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most of my classes weren't very hard but they were really interesting. The professors were great!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very easy to talk to and I felt like they really wanted to get to know me. They were always there for whatever you needed.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

LOVED my host family!

* Food:

lots and lots of rice and beans:)

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was great living with a host family because I felt like I got to experience the true Costa Rican lifestyle. Although, I didn't get to meet that many ticos outside my family.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any medical issues while there so I can't really say. My friend did have an issue and from what I know everything went very smoothly on getting everything figured out.

* Safety:

I felt relatively safe there. You will stick out because you are from the US but just be smart about it. Make sure to take cabs home if it is late at night and not go waving around large amounts of cash, basically common sense.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Figure out how much money you have to spend abroad and what things you really want to do (buy souvenirs, weekend trips, zip lining, etc.) . Make sure you set aside money for that and look what you have left to spend on going out to the bars and going out to eat. STICK TO YOUR BUDGET!

Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
