Anglo Educational Services: London - Birkbeck London Semester Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
This experience was the scariest but most beneficial thing I have ever done for myself. I truly did learn a lot about myself and my future. I would do it again and again if I could.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Anglo Educational Services did a great job staying in touch with students and addressed all concerns with speed and kindness. It was really great to have them as a resource in the city and the information they provided upon arrival as well as through social media made the experience incredibly easy.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The living arrangements were not what I was expecting although their location was great for public transportation and sight seeing. For what I paid I would have hoped to see a nicer and cleaner place as we did live there for 3 months. It would have been great if students had the option to live in a house together as it would have given us the chance to get to know one another.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

By the end of the experience I couldn't imagine not living in London for my whole life and became completely engrossed in the culture. So many great memories.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The healthcare I received while abroad was very good. I had difficulty understanding what was included through our program but did some work to clarify it.

* Safety:

I can honestly say that I never felt unsafe in London. Terrorist threats during my time there did make it scary at times but the city is well protected and staffed with protection. As long as you exhibit common sense about going places you will be absolutely fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I would say that I could comfortably live on 250 GBP per week but also spent money traveling. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world and that's something you need to remember going into it. If you make yourself a budget with room to wiggle you should be fine. Know your limits, but don't miss out on experiences.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Overall I spent about $5-6K with about $250 GPB per week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Always look for free things to do as there are more than you think. When you go out give yourself a limit of what you are willing to spend. Transportation can be costly so keep in mind when you make plans.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Historical Sights
  • Classes
  • Friends that I made
* What could be improved?
  • Housing
  • More group activities
  • More knowledge about what to expect
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish that I would have known more about what to expect money wise so that I wouldn't have spent time worrying about it. This was because I had a really loose budget. I also wish I would have made more of a plan of what I wanted to see because there is so much.
