AIFS: Travel Program – European Art and Architecture

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that every culture and language is beautiful. European art and architecture is spectacular and its history is fascinating.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This program had daily lectures. We also took field trips to museums and talked about the different artistic movements, architecture, and artists. There was 1 quiz, 2-3 podcast reflections, and 1 culminating journal project.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program manager and professor were fantastic. The only thing I might note is I was a little disappointed that when I first arrived in London at the hotel, the program manager was not present because my arrival time was later than most everyone else.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in nice hotels for the majority of the program. We stayed in one student hostel in Paris that wasn't the greatest since lots of younger students were running around all of the time. However, everyone on our trip suggested not staying there in the future to AIFS so the problem should be resolved.

* Food:

Breakfast was provided in all of the places we stayed. We were free to explore for lunch and/or dinner. We all coordinated group meals in two cities which were very fun and delicious!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Our professor taught us a few basic phrases in each language so we could explore independently. We also were taught social customs so that we were respectful to all cultures.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Wear your purse/bag on the front of your body with your hands over the straps/zippers. Do not have valuables (phone, money, etc.) in back pockets or easily accessible areas.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The travelling program allows you to see many European destinations and gives you the freedom to explore outside of the academic program as well. You don't have to be an art or architecture major to go!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Go to grocery stores or markets to buy snacks or sandwiches for lunches that way you only have to worry about spending so much money on food and can have nicer dinners.
