How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Being an American student, the education system and ways the courses were set up was something that I had to adjust too. There were not so many minor tests, but instead just a midterm, final, and final paper. This is typical across Europe. The professors and faculty definitely helped me make this transition. The classes that I took were both informational and exciting. The professors at Richmond in Rome are very passionate about their jobs and made learning fun. The classes that I took often incorporated onsite visits to major attractions and hidden secrets across Rome. Overall, I felt that I learned a lot from the classes that I took abroad and they really embraced the idea of experiential education.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The on-site administration within Richmond and Rome was perhaps my biggest highlight of the trip. Their staff immediately knew our names and always asked us how we were doing that day. The administration also provided us with a wonderful orientation and many tours around the city of Rome. They put so much effort into making the most out of my experience which I am very thankful for. Their friendly faces and greetings will be something that I will always remember.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I felt that I was very satisfied with my living situation. I lived in an apartment with five other students from my program, in the neighborhood of Prati. Prati is a wonderful neighborhood where I always felt safe and there were so many cool things to do! The metro was also only a short walk away and we lived two streets away from the Vatican. I could hear the bells every morning! Within the apartment, we had two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room, along with our bedrooms. I was very satisfied with the whole experience.

* Food:

Perhaps, one of the greatest things that I miss about studying abroad was the food. Rome and Italy, in general, has so many wonderful dishes. My favorite dish was the Spaghetti alla Carbonara. It is a portion of pasta with egg and cheese sauce. There were many amazing dishes which I was able to try while abroad and I was not disappointed.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt that for the amount of time that I lived in Rome, I was very integrated into their culture by the end of my journey. There were many experiences where I was able to integrate myself into society, one of them being my volunteering at a local primary school in Rome.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any health issues while abroad, which I am very fortunate. For my friends who did have health issues, the program provided them with the necessary needs and resources in order for them to get better. We had a doctor that we could call at any time if there was an issue.

* Safety:

Safety was definitely a priority to the administration at Richmond in Rome. During orientation, they provided us with lots of resources and safety tips based around the Roman culture. They prepared us for how to avoid things from happening to what to do if they happened. It was very informational and made me feel safer.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would choose the same program, but would like to travel to different destinations! I am so thankful for the administration and professors who helped me through this experience and made it something to remember!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50 to 70 euros
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Definitely, keep a journal of all that you are spending. This will help you budget and you will know exactly where your money is going.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I took a beginning Italian class for just one semester through my college.
How many hours per day did you use the language?

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The administration and professors
  • The location of our apartment and Richmond in Rome
  • The optional flight package and excursions
* What could be improved?
  • More restaurants added to the meal plan
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew how much study abroad was going to continue to change me after I had gone abroad. I didn't really know what reverse culture shock was until I had experienced it myself. Emmanuel and Richmond had mentioned that it would happen, but I didn't know how big of an effect it was going to have on me.
