What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I was able to focus in on where I want my life and my career to go after being in London. I also gained a broader knowledge of different cultures and lifestyles. I gained tollerance, peace of mind, independence, and most importantly a sense of self.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I loved studying with AIFS in London. Not only were the professors knowledgeable about their subjects, but they were more than happy to help us navigate the area. More often than not we took class trips, or had lectures outside as opposed to staying in the classroom. For the Shakespeare course I took, we walked the old theater district and went to see a play at The Globe. I didn't feel like the work load was too heavy, but thats because we covered so much in class and became comfortable with the material quickly. I loved that the professors understood that as college students, we weren't there just to take classes, but we were there to explore and grow as individuals. They encouraged us to get out and see London, rather than keep our noses in our books. I never would have gained the knowledge or experience I did if I didn't study with AIFS.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I loved being with the AIFS staff in London. They were incredibly helpful with planning and executing trips inside and outside of England. They treated us like adults and respected us. They were a diverse group and each staff member acted as a friend, and made me feel at home.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We lived in a very safe area and I never felt that I was in danger. Most nightlife was within walking distance or a 5 minute tube ride away. Class was two blocks away from my dorm. All I needed to provide was my own toiletries, clothes, and towels. Sheets and a pillow were provided and taken to the cleaners weekly. The dorm wasn't the best quality; however, since the majority of my day was spent in the city, all I did was sleep there so it didn't bother me.

* Food:

We were given debit cards that were loaded with sixty pounds every week to replace a cafeteria plan.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We had so many options for side trips. Every day had a different play, sporting event, day-trip, cruise, or even walking tours of the city available. We did have to pay for these things; however, they were at a lower cost than we would have paid if we went alone.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I didn't have any health issues while I was abroad. I didn't feel like I was in danger at any time. My only advice to students studying abroad is to be smart. No matter where you go you should always watch your belongings at all times. You should have emergency numbers in your wallet or bag in case something happens. You should have a map of the subway or city in case you get lost. And you should use common sense when alone in a new place.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Studying abroad is the best thing that has ever happened to me. That sounds like a cliche, but its true. You gain so much from an experience like this, and going into my senior year of college I needed to start figuring out my life. Being in London helped me do that. I not only have a better grasp of my future, but as myself as an individual. Being so close with my friends and family it was hard to be alone in another country at first, but the staff and students in my program were some of the best people I have ever met. You would be crazy not to go!

Individual Course Reviews

Adaptations: Literature and Cinema

Course Department: Communication
Instructor: Dr. John Chua
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was challenging and interactive. We spent a lot of the class time watching films or reading texts; comparing the two extensively. Due to the nature of the subject, we spent all of our time in the classroom as opposed to out in the city. The teacher was very knowledgeable and gave us his contact information if we should ever want to contact him in the future. I participated quite a bit in this class because it was something I was very interested in.

Shakespeare and His World

Course Department: Literature
Instructor: David Tucker
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was one of the most interesting I have ever taken. I wasn't too excited to take it initially; however, it was a major requirement. But when I met the professor and listened to him through the first day of class, I knew that would change. I not only learned about Shakespeare and his literature, but I discovered a side of London I probably never would have seen. "DT" not only took us on walking tours, but he brought us to roof-top gardens to have discussions. We sat on the river near The Globe and read sonnets. We even went to a pub and had a pint to discuss Shakespeare and his comedies. I loved this class and I would recommend it to anyone. I aquired reading and writing skills that will help me analyze all types of literature, not just the classics. He told personal stories and made class discussion lively and exciting. I loved every minute of it!
