AIFS: Granada - University of Granada and Internship Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much more than what I could have learned in a classroom. I learned how to embrace a culture and immerse myself completely. Allowed myself to get lost in a culture aside from mine and felt like I was becoming part of it. I learned so much about myself

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Hola! My name is Sammy and I studied abroad in Granada, Spain in the Spring of 2018. I went through AIFS and can say it was by far the best program I could have gone with. From the pre-departure process to my arrival back in the US, I felt that I was constantly helped with each new experience. As for the location, Granada was truly the hidden gem of Spain. Everywhere you go, there is something new to see and get to embrace so much of their culture just walking through their streets. I lived with a host family and loved every part of it. I felt so welcomed and like one of their family members. I was able to learn so much about their culture and traditional foods. I had classes from Monday to Thursday and this allowed many students to take up on their weekends to search more of the town or explore more within Europe. The campus I was in, also consisted of many other students from all over the world who were also exchange students. Aside from taking all my courses, I also was able to complete a little over 45 hours of my internship at a local hospital as a medical student. I had the honor to scrub in surgeries and closely work with the doctors there. It was by far one of the most life changing experiences for me to get the opportunity to have this internship as an opportunity. AIFS changed my life in every aspect and would do another program in an instant and will forever have a second home on the other side of the world.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our onsite administration was by far the best team we could have had for our program. They were so helpful and always made sure to know that we were safe at all times and had someone on call for any reason.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Absolutely loved my host family and they were very welcoming to both my roommate and I from the very beginning. They taught us how to cook some of their traditional foods, and took into consideration to any food allergies or diets that we may have.

* Food:

The food was EXCEPTIONAL and loved the variety of food that we had.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like I was able to immerse into their culture fairly quickly and learn so much from staying with my host family.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Our directors were very helpful to any one of their students who needed to see a doctor and would take them to the hospital themselves. Healthcare in Spain is very accessible. Other than my regular vaccines, I did not need any additional vaccines.

* Safety:

Our city was a very small town where they had police officers walking down the streets at all times and felt very safe even walking late at night, there were many officials out to ensure the safety of the community.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I would have not changed a moment of my experience through AIFS. They have set the bar very high and recommend their program to absolutely everyone.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
