About

Discover the intertwined cultures, languages, and histories of France and North Africa during APA’s six-week Franco-Arab Summer program. Students spend five weeks in Paris and one week in Rabat, combining rigorous academics with cultural immersion, site visits, and guided excursions.

Academics

All participants take two complementary four-credit courses designed to connect classroom learning with everyday experiences in Paris and Rabat.

Français dans la ville: French Language
Through the theme Français dans la ville, students develop practical French skills by engaging with urban life in Paris and Rabat. The course examines how shared histories and contemporary France–Maghreb connections shape language, cultural references, and daily communication.

Students enroll at the level appropriate to their experience:

  • Beginner French develops foundational speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through situations drawn from daily life.
  • Intermediate French strengthens fluency, accuracy, and confidence through authentic texts, conversations, and cultural practices.
The course meets Monday through Thursday for two hours per day over five weeks. Students also receive individual language support and participate in activities around Paris with a language assistant, allowing them to practice French beyond the classroom.

Entangled Worlds: Two Centuries of Franco-Arab Encounters
Taught in English, this interdisciplinary seminar investigates the complex historical and contemporary relationships between France and North Africa. Students examine French colonialism as a political system and as a collection of narratives, artistic expressions, and intellectual frameworks that continue to influence how Europe and North Africa understand one another.

Through readings, discussions, site visits, and direct immersion, students explore subjects including migration, identity, religion, colonial memory, and belonging. Works by writers and thinkers who crossed cultural and linguistic borders introduce students to the political and imaginative landscapes of the Francophone Mediterranean.

Experiential and Cultural Learning
Academic study extends into the cities themselves. Cultural activities and site visits in Paris and Rabat, together with excursions to Marseille, Tangier, and Casablanca, help students observe the intersections of French and Maghrebi societies firsthand. An introduction to Darija, Morocco’s Arabic dialect, adds another dimension to the program’s linguistic and cultural focus.

Students live in a student residence while in Paris and stay with a host family in Morocco, creating opportunities to experience local routines, develop intercultural awareness, and connect course themes with everyday life.

Designed for students with a minimum 2.75 GPA and freshman standing or above, the program welcomes both beginning and intermediate French learners.

Participants may also add an optional two-week extension in Paris to pursue independent study or early-stage research.

APA’s Franco-Arab Summer is ideal for students who want to strengthen their French, examine France–North Africa relations from multiple perspectives, and experience an academically engaging summer across Paris and Rabat.
