HI operates nearly 4,000 hostels in more than 60 countries, making it the largest accommodation network in the world. Being accepted into the HI family will provide many benefits, not least that our mission defines our niche in the marketplace. Our hostels are unique because they are not merely a ‘cheap sleep’ - rather they are places that help promote global citizenship and cultural understanding.
Each summer HI also operates IOU Respect, a two-week, intensive, cultural exchange program designed to increase the participants’ knowledge of other cultures, help them develop skills for intercultural communication and foster attitudes that promote mutual understanding and tolerance. Participants from the six countries will engage in a mix of facilitated dialogue sessions (5+ sessions, 3-4 hours each), team-building project work and group outings and activities.
