Worcester College, University of Oxford - Visiting Students Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I really enjoyed the opportunity to go out of my comfort zone, the resources that Oxford allows, and the different types of social events offered there vs at my home college.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Could be at times confusing/felt like I was missing information- though this seems to be more just be the norm of college communications in the UK vs in the US

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

en suite bathroom and a lot of storage, along with scout service (room cleaning). The laundry room was very limited for 3 buildings though.

* Food:

the formal dinner food was good, normal dining food was a pass from me- I mainly cooked + the college was also located conveniently down the street from an outdoor food market with good ethnic foods

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

wasn't applicable- didn't use the nhs because I was unsure of how it worked and whether I was covered under it with a visitor's visa

* Safety:

I felt generally pretty safe walking the city, even at night, due to the volume of people out and about and it being a student city. That being said, there was a violent murder down the street from the college (not college related, but raised concerns re safety).

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

you can save on food, though good food costs more-attending almost every event, formal dinners, various society events, balls, etc. all cost a lot of money though

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I became a member of the Oxford Revue-which was a blast. I appreciated how we were treated like normal students and had equal access/opportunity to resources, orgs, events, tutors, etc.
* What could be improved?
  • I wish I had more information before choosing my tutorials.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That I could be more creative in choosing my tutorials and that social events are pricier than I had anticipated.
