This program is an intensive, comparative introduction to media ethics and media literacy in London. Students will compare ethical expectations regarding freedom of expression, professionalism, and public service in the media. Specific topics may include:

  • The dynamic nature of identity across borders, across media, and across time. Focus on class, ethnicity and Europeanization in media representations of “Britishness.”

  • Normative press theories and the relation of the U.K. press to the state

  • Legal frameworks for media regulation in the U.K.

  • Models of professionalism and their relation to unionization in the U.K. media

  • Global media discourses (e.g., immigration, austerity, celebrity, terrorism, consumerism, sports)
