A Life-Changing Journey Past Review

William & Mary: Summer Program at University of Cape Town

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Everything was worthwhile! We learned so much about South African history and the race relations that still trouble the country and the local communities. It was incredibly interesting to compare South Africa's race relations to the United States'. We also learned so much from the people that we worked with in the townships.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The class I took was perfect for a study abroad experience. It was a good amount of work because it was little enough to allow us to explore the city and do everything we wanted to do, but it still felt like a college-level class.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved living in the SHAWCO House with everyone on my program. It allowed us to become best friends very early in the trip, which I don't think would've happened otherwise.

* Food:

I liked the allowance that we received for dinner, but breakfasts and lunches weren't as good and sometimes not enough.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We were only somewhat immersed in the city because everything we did was very planned. We did all of the tourist attractions, but we never really got to explore or integrate with the culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Write down what you spend each day so that you remember and have an idea of what you're spending money on. You'll be more organized, plus you'll remember that sometimes it was worth it to spend.
