About

The purpose of this course will be to explore various athletic health related careers of individuals in various areas of the world, including Australia, Japan, Scotland, Canada, South Africa, and countries in Europe.  Students will explore the preparation, scope of practice, education, and licensing/certification of specific careers in these countries to compare this with requirements in the United States.

In the United States, the profession and practice of athletic training is well established. This scenario is almost exclusive to North America though. As a result, the role of “athletic trainer” may be played by a number of professionals or not even addressed at all, depending upon the country.  As we have an increasing number of professional opportunities to travel and practice abroad it becomes more important that we can work with these individuals.  This creates challenges and opportunities as the practice of athletic training becomes more globalized.  The Olympics that were held recently are a great example of professionals coming together to collaborate in the care of the athletes.  This course will include projects and assignments specifically designed to give students an in depth look at the internationalization of athletic training and sports medicine. Lectures from and interviews with professionals practicing sports medicine/athletic training in Manchester will be included on-site.
