Year Abroad at Saint Andrews Past Review

University of St. Andrews: St. Andrews - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worthwhile. I learned a lot about myself and made great friends. It showed me though how much I appreciate Wellesley's academics, and even certain parts of its small community. Being at a bigger school was great, but the academics fell short.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload typically consists of 2 essays throughout the semester and then one exam at the end that will count for around 50% of your final grade. Class sizes will tend to be in the hundreds in intro classes, whereas 3rd and 4th year classes will be about the size of Wellesley ones. However, there is certainly less student involvement in terms of asking questions or being called on. Most notes for the class can be found online.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I stayed in David Russel Apartments, which are university owned apartment style accommodation. It was quite modern, but a mile outside of town, which for such a small town was really annoying if I wanted to meet someone quickly in town (it was a 20 minute walk), or was late for classes. The buildings are nice though, you have a lot of good facilities in the kitchen that you share with 4 other students. You also get your own double bed and bathroom. I liked not having to be on the meal plan, like students do in other halls, because I heard the food was pretty bad.

I disliked how far away my housing was from my classes and the town. However, it was nice to have a shared kitchen and my own bathroom and double bed. So I guess it's a trade-off.

* Food:

Cooked my own food, but there are lots of restaurants in town if you don't feel like cooking.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

St. Andrews is a great place to go out and meet new people. Everyone is quite easy going.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I had 2 very bad experiences with the NHS, who everyone was covered by. However, some people have been treated well by them, so maybe it depends on what doctor you get. You do have the option to go to private doctors, you just have to pay an arm and a leg for them. St. Andrews is a really safe town. There were a couple of isolated incidents for the whole year I was there, but nowhere near students really go. There's certainly less of an honor code though, so I would caution people against leaving their laptops in the library, etc. Those did get stolen a few times, I heard.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About 100 pounds at least. I spent a lot of money going out for dinners or drinks, and it definitely adds up more quickly than you'd think.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? After the first month or 2, come up with an actual list of monthly expenses and calculate how much you have left over for other things. I wish I had come up with a better budget !

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Europe and the World 1850-2000

Course Department: History MO2007
Instructor: Various instructors
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was a second year history course, with around 200 students. The only discussion came from our weekly tutorials, which I enjoyed a lot as the tutor was always prepared and asked that we engage in discussion. Several of the instructors were really interesting and were experts in their fields, others drew only 20% of the class at most to their lectures. The good parts of this course though were excellent !

Economics of Social Life

Course Department: Economics: EC4504
Instructor: Ian Smith
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was a great course. It was something that could be applied to everyday behavior or social norms, and wasn't too mathematically demanding. I found most of the economics courses at St. Andrews to be more articles based rather than mathematically or econometrics based. The instructor had been teaching this course for years, so he was really well prepared. Again though, class discussion was not a part of the class, nor was it really encouraged when someone did try to ask questions.
