By (Cinema And Media Studies, Wellesley College) for

University of Roehampton: London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was definitely worth while. I was able to overcome challenges I wasn't sure I would be able to overcome.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was easily managed, the grading system was a bit intimidating, especially since it

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I feel that the amount of time it took to get things done was not as expeditious as I was used to.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing was really nice, it was on campus and the neighborhood is very good.

* Food:

We responsible for making our own food, but there were several cafes across campus that we could buy food from at an affordable price.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Our first weekend there, they organized a photo contest/scavenger hunt that I though was excellent. It really gave us a chance to explore the city, navigate the public transportation, and see the sights without it being too overbearing because we were with a group. There was also a party on campus every Friday night, which was entertaining.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It was made known to us that there were health services available. The location of my program was in a very nice part of London, which made me feel quite safe when going out and walking around campus. When going to visit my friends at other Universities in London I realized what a nice neighborhood I lived in, and I feel it made my experience there all the better.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Probably 100 pounds. I eat a lot, and I would go out to the movies and to get something to eat about once or twice a week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Get a student Oyster card when you first get there, it really helps save money. And make sure to take advantage of the student discounts that you can get in a lot of places around London. A lot of nice restaurants in central london have two for one meals Monday through Thursday, so going out doesn't have to be too expensive.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Go for it. I think Roehampton is a great place to be if you are interested in exploring other places in London. It was very easy for me to explore, Putney, Surrey, Hammersmith, and Kingston, in addition to central London.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Photography Workshop

Course Department: PHT020C104
Instructor: Andrew Porter
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I really enjoyed this course, although I feel that there was a lot of repetition in the lecture due to poor class attendance. I feel that this course has the potentially to be even more challenging than it was. That being said, it was also the most challenging course I took all semester and really enjoyed the instructor and course material.

Comments: This course was great. I felt that the lecture really helped prepare me for the final piece I had to write. I feel that out of all of my coursework at Roehampton, I will take what I learned from this class and be able to apply it the most as I continue to study.
