Tufts-in-Oxford: An Amazing, if Somewhat Rocky, Experience! Past Review

By (Quantitative Economics and International Relations, ) for

University of Oxford - Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes it was definitely worthwhile. I've made some friends I know I will keep in touch with for life and I definitely believe it has changed the direction of my career choices. It has helped me narrow down my field of interest and made me even more determined to succeed in that field. Seeing the passion of the faculty and students towards their subjects was truly inspiring.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The program helped me develop my research skills and be more comfortable in settings of direct discussion and involvement with distinguished and passionate professors and students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The faculty and administration staff were amazing! Everyone was very, very caring and helpful no matter the problem. The entire Oxbridge system is slighlty complicated itself and that was a bit confusing.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The local students were great; the kitchen was clean and spacious; the fridges worked; there was a lady who came in once a week to vacuum the room and clean out the sink, who was extremely nice. Needed to buy duvets, pillows, water boilers, crockery and utensils--the general things that one would probable need to buy anywhere while attending any program.

* Food:

I enjoyed the food. The taste was good and they attempted a substantially varied menu every week. There were pretty good vegetarian options and the atmosphere of the dining hall was very intimate and conducive to happy conversation.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There were a number of field trips hosted by the London advisers including a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon. They always had discounted tickets to plays and operas and even organized holiday dinners so the students wouldn't miss home too much such as during thanksgiving.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The town was pretty safe even late at night. Although I had a cold when I first arrived (everyone gets a cold when they first get there! be prepared for when that hits)the rest of the time I was in pretty good physical health.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Be very, very sure that you are willing to commit yourself to the courses you take. And it would be advisable to take courses that you have some background knowledge of. Although I loved my economics courses I had a slightly more complicated experience wth my politics courses as I had a) never taken a politics class before ad b) was in a room with students who had specifically taken politics courses in high school--usually in the same region and time line as in the courses provided. It made it slightly more difficult to keep up and was even a bit disheartening at times. On the flip side, I felt most rewarded whenever I saw actual improvement in these courses versus the economics ones where I had an easier time understanding the topics.
