University of Northern Iowa: Traveling - UNI Capstone in London and Paris

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was fun being in different cultures. I had not traveled to a country before that our money was actually worth less in, that was an interesting change. I would like to return to France and get out of the city, I feel like it would be a whole different experience. Paris was just dirty, smelly, and filled with people trying to get our money. I think Paris could have been done in 3 days. London was a great experience,we learned a ton and saw a lot of interesting places.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

No host university

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The professor was not very knowledgeable, I'm disappointed with the lack of information we received.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The hostel in Paris was much nicer than the hostel in London, although the hostel in London was more convenient. Towels were not provided at either. Both neighborhoods were pretty safe. The biggest problem we had in the hostels were getting our electronics to work without blowing up. Neither locations were close to the best nightlife.

* Food:

London's food was better than the food in France. Both places had American food places (subway, pizza hut, etc) but with slightly different menus. Decent sized meals. I can't remember specific names of places to try.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
