Semester in Cyprus: An opportunity to Travel! Past Review

University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Being in a foreign country, and with students from across the United States I learned a sense of understanding and acceptance or willingness to learn more about other countries and cultures. Getting exposed to how other people live before taking the leap into the real world of adulthood was eye opening and worth every penny.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The courses were not as difficult or as challenging as my courses at UW Madison, however that worked well with my ability to enjoy my study abroad experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I truly enjoyed the trips that my group took to Italy, Spain and Greece. They did not seem like they were structured prior to my arrival in Cyprus but the employees did a great job of taking care of us during our stay and ensuring that all of our needs were met.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The accommodations we lived in were GREAT!

* Food:

Trying new food not only in CY but in other countries we visited was exciting and enjoyable.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone was very welcoming and open with us!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I personally did not need any health issues addressed, however our staff was great and making sure we had all the information we would need to get our health issues addressed by the proper individuals

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It could have been ALOT more expensive, but it was not obviously easy to save money as well.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About 60 euros, or $90
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would advise people to generally cook in their apartment and pick and choose when you want to go out to eat and make sure to create an experience out of eating out. There are too many opportunities to spend money on other things to waste it on food for small meals at underwhelming restaurants.
