What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to relax and separate my social life from my academic life. By traveling on the weekends, I learned how to be more independent. It was 100% worthwhile!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I wasn't really held accountable for my coursework, which I'm not used to. Because of this, I missed more class and skipped more readings than I would normally. Although I did fine in the end, I would have learned more if I was more disciplined!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt like I met mostly other American students and other international students, both from my housing and my classes.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

You can easily register for a GP at the beginning of the semester, which makes it easier to go to a doctor if health problems arise later.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Even though I mostly became friends with other American study-abroad students, those friendships were really strong and the result of a great semester. If I could do it all again, I would try harder to maintain friendships with Scottish students by joining more organizations, but I don't at all regret how I spent my time abroad.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 150 USD
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Eat meals at home!

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • A relaxed drinking culture!
  • The university is very close to natural beauty!
  • I got to experience large lectures, which was very different than my home university.
* What could be improved?
  • More accountability for coursework
  • More integration with local students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had studied throughout the semester, because final exams in the UK often account for more than 90% of your final grade. This is very different from American course structure and was a hard adjustment which I should have prepared for from the beginning!
