Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The grading system is different and proves as a challenge for many American students to grow accustomed to. In the US the grading starts at 100 and they mark you down for things you do poorly. At UCT they start with 0 and mark you up for things you do well, therefore your ending marks do not end as high.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The University of Cape Town and South Africa made studying abroad a very fun experience. As a nonprofit leadership major the country was a great place to be to experience the challenges and opportunities surrounding international nonprofits.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

I made my own food. So if you are living in a house where you are required to make your own food, bring your recipes!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you are a student looking to learn from nonprofits and social development experiences South Africa is the place to be. As a developing nation living in both a first and third world setting I learned so much about the international context of human suffering and joy.
