University of California - Davis: Travelers in Greece

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes my study abroad experience was definitely worth while. I had gone to different countries before this, but doing it with students from diffrent schools and with a teacher native to the country was like nothing I had ever experienced. I really got to enjoy and experience the Greek culture and their customs and beliefs and even the crazy way they drive! I would do it all over again, same teacher, same places, just different experiences.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really liked how the work we did in class tied to the ancient and modern history of the country and how it somewhat prepared us for the different culture we were going to expect. We had to write journal entries once a week which made us pay particular attention to the things we did, what we noticed, and what we noticed people noticed about us as travelers. Sharing our experiences in class and comparing them to the books we had to read were real and interesting. The work wasn't hard just tedious at times, but still a lot more fun then the things we would do in a classroom back in California. We got to see and experience the things we read in the books and we had the chance to write them down as well.Our teacher in Greece is an english teacher at my university but she was a native of Greece so the class was just that much better. She was a good teacher and she had personal insight in a lot of the things we talked about, especially when we focused on WWII.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I did not have a host country administration

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We basically moved from hotel to hotel in every city we went to and every time we were with the same roommate. I personally loved it because me and my roommate got along very well. The staff was always really friendly and spoke some english, enough to get our point across and understand each other.

* Food:

We mostly ate out, we only ever had breakfast provided. We had like four scheduled dinners and they were terrific! We had one vegetarian and one student who did not eat red meat and they never complained about the dinner not meeting their needs. Greek food was amazing!!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We had the chance to talk to a lot of older Greeks, in particular friends of our teacher, and we also talked to a lot of young Greeks. We went to a lot of museums and learned about the history of Greeks, but modern history we achieved by talking to locals. We did not talk as much as I would have liked to locals, but in all it was a great experience.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

We did not have any problem at all with safety or health issues. I'm allegric to nuts and my teacher always warned me of certain foods that had nuts even when we were not eating together and when I developed a cough she went to the pharmacy with me to help e pick the proper medicine. It all went well and luckily no one got hurt in any way

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
