What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I would choose a different program within this university. My overall study abroad experience was worthwhile because of the people I met and the traveling I got to do. The academic experience was poor and hardly an experience at all. I gained a much broader cultural experience from people who I met from other European countries.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The public policy department is relatively new at University College London. They do not have an undergraduate program, so they group all of the American study abroad students together, and assign a PhD student to teach the classes. Courses are only based on two essays, so you don't have much opportunity to show what you actually know.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Students were basically on their own after attending the program's orientation.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in Schafer House in Camden near Warren Street station. The room was very small, but location in London was very central. I had a three person flat where we each had our own room and shared a bathroom and a kitchen. Our rooms were joined by one small hallway. Because it's a university dorm, and usually first years live there, it can be very loud at night from flat parties.

The rent was pretty high and if you leave early to go back to your home country, you still must pay the entire rent until the end of the contract.

* Food:

I lived in a non-catered hall, so I bought my own groceries and cooked for myself.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There are so many things to do in London and so many people to meet. You can really learn a lot and see a lot and have a wonderful time.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I got sick once, went to the health center at school and got a prescription, and used it to buy medicine at the local pharmacy.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $225 to $300. The cost of living in London is quite high.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Transportation expenses get quite high, get a student oyster card to get discounts each time you use the subway or bus.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

International Security

Course Department: POLS6005B
Instructor: Sara Kutchesfahani

Comments: Only ten lectures, two of which were guest lecturers who spoke about their area of research, deviating from the topic of discussion. Didn't really learn much except from my own research for a paper assignment.

Theories and Concepts of Politics

Course Department: POLS6012
Instructor: Deborah Savage
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was the first course this lecturer taught at UCL as she was new to the department. She was actually pretty good in the sense that she directs you to think about the right questions about political theory. But she sometimes has difficulty interpreting the questions that students are asking. So she could give you more information, or answer your questions better.

Renaissance Art in London

Course Department: HART1201
Instructor: Gilly Hatch
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was amazing. It is taught in the National Gallery once a week and you move from one painting to another discussing them. The format of the class is really good in the sense that you move chronologically and really see the differences and changes in Italian Renaissance painting. The lecturer is really good and answers anything you ask her in a informative way. I had a really good experience.

International Development and Public Policy

Course Department: POLS6007B
Instructor: Nicole Salisbury

Comments: Lecturer was and American PhD student. Didn't have a great understanding of Economics, and read aloud from lecture notes. She wasn't very enthusiastic in class or in seminar, and tended to space out when students were talking in seminar. She was more of a moderator than professor.
