Towson University: Traveling - Tropical Field Ecology, Peru

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Totally! I gained an understanding of the Amazon and Peruvian culture. I would go back in a heartbeat!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Workload was not stressful, but was a higher caliber than most students would be comfortable working at.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed in tents, lodges, and hostels throughout the trip. It was a great experience, even if you did find a cockroach or two in your shoes :)

* Food:

The food was amazing! Both local and american food! Some amazing selections of local cuisine!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Shopping in the market, hiking Machu Picchu, tours of the city, eating dinner out!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

At the research station, the situation was not the safest because you would have to travel two days by boat just to get medical attention.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent about $60 on personal expenses over the whole trip (about 20 a week)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? No advice, most of the things on this trip were paid for in the enrollment fee. (other than souvenirs)

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Make sure you are in shape and bring bug repellent! This trip is definitely for the adventurous, out-doors type! Such an amazing experience! Only pack what is on the packing list because you do not want to carry all of your stuff through the rainforest! The lighter the better!
