SUNY Geneseo: Oxford - Humanities Course

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned about another society and experienced how they lived, which I was able to observe over the course of four weeks. This trip was more conducive to this than a week long vacation I took when I was 15. Yes, it was completely worthwhile. I loved ever second of it.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The course was very manageable during my study abroad. I was able to complete the required work for class as well as experience the sights in Oxford.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Since the course was taught by a SUNY Geneseo professor, the class was orchestrated like any other Geneseo class.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Single rooms were a very nice privilege.

* Food:

Some nights it was really good, but other nights not so much. Breakfast was good though.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really felt like I was becoming a part of the city at the end. I didn't want to leave because it started to feel like home.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't really have any experience with the health system, but when one of the girls went to the hospital, the program director arranged for her to go. The porters at New College even offered to help out as well.

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Oxford. I had no issues walking around alone during the day. I never went out by myself at night, but in small groups it was fine.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I spent $1400 while I was there, but this included an excursion to Paris and some expensive souvenirs.

* Was housing included in your program cost? Yes
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Not counting souvenirs, probably around $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Withdrawing money from an ATM probably saves you more money than having money exchanged at an exchange bureau.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No
