SUNY Binghamton: Nottingham - Exchange & Study Abroad Program at University of Nottingham

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Doing this study aboard program was the best decision I have made so far in my life. I learn so much from all the new people I meet and new places I went to. I joined club that I never even pictured myself doing. I have gained a new prospective on how things are done in different countries. I have a better understanding of different cultures due to my traveling around Europe.It was without a doubt a worthwhile and satisfying experience I will always treasure.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Overall, the educational experience was comfortable. It was just a matter of time management. It was a great experience to be able to live in another country, out of your ordinary environment.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Overall, the program was great. The modules were challenging and knowledgeable. The one thing I didn't really like was that the professors weren't approachable like in the U.S.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My living arrangement was a flat style apartment. There was 6 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a large common area with a kitchen. You get your own room the size is good. I lived with 5 girls and it was an amazing experience.

The location was great, right next to the business campus. I felt safe were I was living and if they was any problems with our apartment they would fix it right away.

* Food:

It was nice being able to cook for yourself. It also helped you save on money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Nottingham was the perfect fit for me. It wasn't to loud of a city, but there was enough to do. The shopping, restaurants and night life was great!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The health issues were presented adequately through the program.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? To be honest it changed every week. For food I would say 20-30 pounds.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? My advice would be save as much money as possible before you go aboard. Little things come up that you will need to spend money. For, example I had to fix my computer since it wouldn't connect to the university network.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I believe my language skills improve in terms of adjusting to England's culture.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you have the time and money to study aboard take full advantage of it.I think the University of Nottingham was a great program they are a well established university in England. It is also a plus that all the classes take place in English.
