SUNY Binghamton: Edinburgh - Exchange & Study Abroad Program at University of Edinburgh

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I feel that I grew in academic and personal ways in Edinburgh. The program prepared me for the type of serious scholarly endeavor that I am currently engaged in in graduate school. I hope to keep in touch with many of the people I met abroad and forge lasting friendships.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The professors were brilliant, the students were rigorous, and the class layout prepared me for advanced work in History.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

This is a fantastic program that helped me grow in a scholarly and personal matter. My only critique would be that the English give grades back very late.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The view from my dorm overlooked a 250 million year old basalt mountain and magnificent gardens. I could not complain.

* Food:

The city has many food options. I was particularly fond of the Mosque Kitchen across the street from the campus.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

If you go to Edinburgh, the bar scene in Grassmarket and Cowgate is phenomenal. Don't forget to go to a traditional dance!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never felt unsafe in the city, even if I was walking back from a pub or the library at four in the morning. I never had any health problems, so I am not very well acquainted with their system.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Edinburgh is known for its history program. If you have any inkling to study the language, literature, or culture of the Celtic Fringe, this school is a great fit.
