Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA): Traveling - Student Teachers in Costa Rica

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Traveling to Costa Rica and being completely immersed in their culture really allowed all of the students to see how difficult it is for students to come into our classrooms in America. I learned so much, not only about Latin American culture, but also about how to create a diverse classroom. I learned more about myself and my abilities as well. This truly was a life changing experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The coursework wasn't too much, but it also wasn't too little. We all learned so much from the articles and nightly discussions. Plus, hearing everything from our instructor was so interesting!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I wish the program had been a little smaller, but my expectations were met.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We stayed at different places which Dr. Armstrong arranged. Even though the living arrangements are different from what we are used too, they really help you understand the life style in Costa Rica.

* Food:

Learn to love beans and rice!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

SkyTrek was one of the best experiences from the trip!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

You're safe as long as you're aware of your surroundings. Be cautious!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
