SOAS London Study Abroad Experience Past Review

By (Economics., Wellesley College) for

SOAS, University of London: London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My study abroad experience was worthwhile, because being on my own taught me how to be more independent and rely on myself. It also broadened my horizons because I traveled to places I had never been to before.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The British system takes a more "self-study" approach than the American system. Students are given syllabuses with long reading lists and they are expected to come prepared to lecture and tutorials to discuss the readings. There are few assignments but a lot of reading. So it is all about how self-disciplined and motivated you are.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The study abroad adviser at SOAS was extremely friendly and extremely helpful and accessible. Class sizes were similar to those at Wellesley. I was expecting them to be larger.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

There was no dining hall in my dormitory.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

SOAS fresher's fair was a great opportunity to get to know all of the different clubs and organizations on campus.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

London is generally pretty safe. Thankfully I did not get sick and I didn't have any experience with healthcare.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I spent around 20 - 30 pounds on food and transportation every week. If you budget wisely you won't need to spend more than that.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be aware of the exchange rate. It is about 1.5 USD to 1 GBP. At times people can forget and they end up spending more than they realize.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

Direct Enrollment/Exchange
