Royal Holloway, University of London: London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned out to adapt to different cultures and a new environment. It was definitely worth it, I just wish it were at a school in London.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I didn't like the class structure that much. It didn't really seem like most of the professors cared about students, especially study abroad students.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

It was pretty unorganized, and extremely difficult to get problems resolved.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It offered really nice housing arrangements, and I liked how I was not placed with other exchange students so I was able to make friends with British students quickly.

* Food:

The food is not good. Food in England is not good as a whole, but once inside London the food is amazing.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was able to make friends very quickly. Everyone in England is very nice.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had to go to the emergency room my first day, and it was very easy when I used my international student insurance card. It only got difficult when I tried to get healthcare on campus. Since I was in England for less than six months and I did not have a visa, they wouldn't let me register with the health center, so I had to pay 30 pounds just to speak to a doctor and then full price for the prescriptions. This is something Bentley should notify you with ahead of time.

* Safety:

I felt safe in Egham and also in London.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Friends
  • Windsor
  • Founders
* What could be improved?
  • A different school inside of london
  • Better notification of health-related issues
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I understood how far from London it was and how difficult and expensive it would be to get in and out of the city. If I did, I would have chosen a different program or found a partner school myself inside of the city. I think it would have been a better experience and a better opportunity.
