Queen's University: Ontario - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
American-Canadian exchange is underrated. I was able to learn a lot from my exchange, both academically as well as socially and culturally.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

We were a little far from campus, but the bus system made commuting a lot easier. Also, all exchange students who apply for on-campus housing are housed with other exchange students in a dorm where the rest of the students are freshmen.

* Food:

I had a partial meal plan and enjoyed the dining halls on campus.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Living with all exchange students partially took away from total immersion in the Canadian culture, but it also provided other benefits. I did also get to interact with many Canadian students through my classes.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Great health care - the on-campus clinic was very helpful.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It wasn't particularly expensive once you know where to shop and how to budget your funds for entertainment purposes. Traveling around Canada, which I highly recommend, can however increase the cost.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • great classes
  • great exchange network
* What could be improved?
  • more interaction with local students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? On-campus housing provides a great community but is a little farther from campus. Get to know the city of Kingston and more importantly other large Canadian cities around the province and even in Quebec.
