Queen's University Belfast: Belfast - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Even with the parts I didn't like, it was a great and worthwhile experience, as it would have been where ever I went. I went with a positive outlook and I had a positive experience, and I met a lot of amazing people and saw a lot of amazing things.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My classes were very interesting and the professors were deeply involved in the subject matter they were teaching - an excellent combination.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

My overseas University held a 2 day long orientation where we were able to meed other international students and find out about the curriculum and what to expect. Although they had an excellent orientation, they did not do much to make sure things were okay after that.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in Elms Village - the main dorm at Queen's University Belfast. It's a long walk from the University and most of the students go home on the weekends, so it gets pretty empty. I would recommend Grant House instead - the international dorm.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My overseas university had a International group that planned trips and activities for international students - a trip to a hockey game, a trip to 2 castles, etc. Most spare time was spent at bars and clubs.

* Safety:

It is a relatively long walk from the University to the dorms, so at night it was a little nerve-racking. Other than that Belfast seemed to be a very safe city. I didn't have any experience with the student health center.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I'm sorry to say that the Belfast mentality would have to be - the less you spend on food the more money you have for alcohol.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Fluent
Language acquisition improvement?

I was not in a language immersion program. My abroad University was an English-speaking institution.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I have a place in my heart for Belfast, but I wish I had done a bit more research before I went. Don't let the study abroad office at your home university pressure you or make you feel like you can't go where you want. Do what you want - you're the one paying for it!!!!!!!!!
