Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The main purpose of going abroad was the travel and I was able to do this easily from London.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes were too easy yet frustrating because of the procedures we had to follow for something as simple as turning in an assignment. Although I took upper level courses in addition to introductory ones, I was rarely challenged.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Administration did not seem to be enthusiastic to deal with students. I was tossed around to different secretaries for two weeks before I found the proper contact. The program's strengths are that there is a vibrant community and plenty of time during which to travel.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing was good, the cleaning service was nice. I wished that they provided cooking ware for us since buying everything was expensive and frustrating when we had to leave it behind after just two months.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved the spring fair and the farmer's market that happened every week. I also took advantage of the squash club and their willingness to teach students for very little money. I made some great friends that way.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Safety was excellent! I thought that the surrounding area was a little off putting in that it was not a good idea to walk alone at night, but as soon as I went onto campus grounds I felt very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About 40 pounds or $60 on food and maybe another 20 pounds, or $30, on going out per week. This is keeping in mind that I like to eat meat with most meals and food was overall expensive in London.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? You need a chip and pin credit card at a lot of places. The normal US magnetic swipe cards are not accepted everywhere.
