An amazing, although unexpected, semester in London! Past Review

By (Monash University) - abroad from 01/14/2020 to 06/07/2020 with

Queen Mary University of London Study Abroad programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was completely worthwhile, as I gained good friends and the experience of living in another city. A big thing I learnt was to be flexible and calm in unexpected situations.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I really enjoyed my classes at QMUL! The professors were very engaged, the class sizes were small, and it was supportive. The only shame while I was there was the academic strikes which disrupted semester.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything was relatively straightforward. Academic staff and the Global Opportunities team were very helpful in fixing any problems. One thing to note as an exchange student, is that to add/drop modules you have to visit individual schools in person and I did experience a few clashes when trying to take units across multiple schools.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My accommodation was very convenient, being on-campus, in the heart of East London and only a short train ride from central London. There was not a lot of opportunities to meet others sharing the accommodation, however I made most of my friends through global opportunities events, clubs and class.

* Food:

There are a few food options on campus, with the Curve and Drapers being reasonably affordable options with some great meals. There is also lots of nearby places to eat such as Nando's, Wetherspoons, some cute coffee shops and supermarkets such as Coop.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

People were generally very friendly and welcoming.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There is a clinic on campus which is free and conveniently located. It is good to be aware that there can be a long waiting list though. In urgent issues, the clinic can provide appointments at other clinics in London after-hours, but this can be difficult to get to comfortably at night.

* Safety:

I felt safe on campus (especially with on campus security) and relatively safe in London during the day. I didn't feel completely safe in London at night by myself, but did feel safe when walking in a group. It is good to watch out for petty theft, in particular mobile phones.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Despite the challenging circumstances my exchange took place in, I had a great time. My classes were engaging, I made lots of great friends, the university was supportive, and I got to explore London as well as some areas in the UK and Europe.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? - Get student discounts on Oyster cards and longer transport options. - Mainly cook your own food.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

  • Meeting people
  • Exploring London
  • Interesting classes and supportive uni
* What could be improved?
  • More residential support programs
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I knew to be a bit more flexible and relaxed, while making the most of every opportunity. I also wish I realised how important joining a club is to meet people outside study abroad earlier in the semester.
