What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My experience was most definitely worthwhile and one of the best experiences of my life. I have gained countless new perspectives on life and have had the opportunity to interact with individuals from across the globe. It has prepared me to move out into the world and really utilize my degree. I feel prepared to go anywhere and am confident I will have the skills to adapt and change.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I loved the Problem Based Learning atmosphere at UM, I really learned to be a more independent and progressive student and thinker. I also had the chance to work more on my own, on an independent study project which really helped me understand a higher committment to my education. I feel like this experience prepared me to explore graduate study and life beyond undergraduate study. I also enjoyed that the only form of assessment was one final exam at the end of the module, this was much different from my coursework in the U.S.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

UM and their FPN international office were always very welcoming to me. They were always ready to help me plan my courses and provided me with information on countless other issues. In addition, my instructors were understanding and flexible, and very receptive to hear about my education, culture and future plans.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing at the Guesthouse was a bit expensive but allowed me to live very close to my academic building. There are numerous guesthouses around the city of Maastricht and I was placed very close to my faculty but a long walk or bus ride to the city center. A bicycle was a necessary resource for my stay. When you get a bike, make sure you BUY A LOCK for it. Your bicycle is likely to be stolen without one. I had a bike that only had a small lock that stopped the back wheel, but even this was thwarted when someone picked it up, and carried it away. Other than that, I had no safety issues. If you dont know of any places to live prior to going to abroad, the guesthouse may be a nice option, but try to look around for pricing options if you have a flexible schedule. However the guesthouse is where numerous other international students live so it was possible to meet individuals that were similar to me or my experience.

* Food:

Cooked on my own the entire time and had no problems. Get ready to use a mini-fridge! I had the opportunity to attend multiple fresh markets, organic stores, and a general supermarket all just a bus ride away. I had no trouble cooking on my own but have had years of experience. Try and buy fresh food and not stock up, space may be limited.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I took a lot of side trips and met countless individuals from all across the globe. All experiences that I will never forget.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Very safe in Maastricht! I never felt like I had to worry about anything.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)
