Guided, a bit do-it-yourself, but infinitely rewarding. Past Review

London School of Economics (LSE): London - General Course, Year-Long Study Abroad Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Personal agency, a better work ethic, knowledge from world-class professors, experience with people from all over the world, a crush on Britain's public transportation, and the ability to play cricket. Worth it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Staff always helpful, the Dean of the General Course (Dean Hoffman) a fantastic guy and accommodating.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was in a dorm not too far from campus in Southwark- good neighborhood, good food, large rooms.

* Food:

I mean, it's school food, and the Brits often serve fish n' chips.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I never tried to "be British". It's an international city, so although you call things what Londoners call things, it's not that huge of a cultural barrier.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

It's good, and immediate care is free even if you're foreign. Register with a GP (General Practitioner) though just in case. Don't ever go for the free dental care though.

* Safety:

It's a supremely safe part of town that the LSE and the accommodations are in. It's as safe as a safe city is.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

If I'd go again, I would be more grown-up, able to exploit the resources I had even more and explore more in the city and Europe. I did so much, but there was so much left to do. Not to mention I would have better study habits from the beginning of the year. I had to adjust to the amount of reading I had to do.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

LSE is cheaper than American schools, though it depends on the housing plan you select. The cost of living is higher being in the city, but you just need to game it right with the many, many convenience stores and options on campus.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $60-70
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Use the meal deals at the local Sainsbury's, Tesco, or Co-op.

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

  • The courses
  • The school
  • The Brits
* What could be improved?
  • More Brandeis-led activities
