INSTEP: London - Institute of Economic and Political Studies

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, I learned a lot about myself and about other cultures. I have a new appreciation for America, but also for Europe and all of the history that is there and how much there is to see and do. London is a wonderful city and I'm very happy that I had the opportunity to live there, learn more about it, and spend time immersed in a different culture.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The program had everything that we needed, but because there was only one person who worked for them in the UK, it was often difficult to get him to help us with things. Overall though, the program did a good job of providing us with resources and a strong educational experience, while also helping us get accustomed to living in a different country.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

* Safety:

London is very safe. Take the typical precautions and you will be fine. Don't walk by yourself at night, always bring a cell phone, don't carry around tons of cash. INSTEP provides insurance, but you can also just go to any doctor and pay out of pocket and submit it to your insurance company at home if you want to go somewhere else. INSTEP provides us with a list of doctors and hospitals that accept our insurance.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $300
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Everything is very expensive in London. Start thinking in pounds before you go (approx. 1.5 to the dollar)
