IES Abroad: Amsterdam - Social Sciences & Humanities

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to live alone! My home school has a meal plan that provided all my food. However, while studying abroad, you have to prepare all your own meals and just live alone. Also you're in a different timezone. It was worthwhile because it was the first taste of actual independence I've had

Studying abroad at IES was the best experience of my life. In fact, I had such a good time that it feels like a dream when I remember it, as if it did not even happen to me. Of course this would not be possible without IES. The IES staff within Amsterdam were some of the most friendly people I've ever met. Additionally, I experienced the same kindness from the professors who gave lectures through IES.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I alloted myself $20 a day for food, many days I would spend less
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Shop at the market for fresh foods that are cheaper but spoil faster. Don't eat out too often because Amsterdam's restaurants are overpriced (tourism drives price up)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

The Dutch actually do not have a problem with speaking English. I was personally encouraged to speak Dutch, however I will also say that even when I began conversations in Dutch with strangers, they would quickly change to English

Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
