Eastern Illinois University (EIU): Andros Island - Science and Schooling

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It is definitely worthwhile. I would recommend this trip to anyone going into education. I learned soo much about myself as a person and as a future educator.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

My only complaint would be that I wish the on-site staff had more enthusiasm. You could tell they were burnt out.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was quite an experience with all of the bugs and the heat, however it was very clean and a beautiful place to stay.

* Food:

I have a gluten allergy and they said there would be accommodations but there rarely was and I usually did not get enough food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

You are completely living within the culture for this trip. There is not even any restaurants or tourists on the island. I loved that about the trip.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

NA

* Safety:

I felt completely safe throughout the entire trip.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

My teachers and the group of students I went with on the trip made any problems with bugs or heat seem like nothing at all. Everything we did was an amazing and educational experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life. This trip gave me confidence in teaching and whenever I am down or stressed about the education program I think about those sweet kids I had the chance to teach while I was there and then I remember why I am in this field.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The overall trip is pretty pricey because I had to pay completely on my own. However, once you are there you really are not spending much money at all. I probably spent $100 while I was there just on ice cream and souvenirs.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? nothing once I paid for the program I did not need to spend money on anything else
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? You can spend as little or as much as you want while you are there.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
