Falling in Love with Copenhagen and Myself October 19, 2026
By A student (Political Science and Government, Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/16/2026 to 05/15/2026 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
I feel much more settled into myself and confident in not only what I want to do, but who I am as a person and who I want to be. It was absolutely worthwhile.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Not very rigorous and the expectations were quite low, but excellent resources and support for students. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Very hands-on and accommodating of the various needs of students. Always available for assistance. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I loved the location, but I don't think a quad room with people you did not pick nor know is a feasible living arrangement. There was almost no opportunities for person space within the room, and I experienced some conflict that made home less than a safe space for me. |
| * Food: |
Very expensive, and making all the meals yourselves, but the kitchen was well-stocked with utensils and good recommendations for where to shop/how to save. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The Danish are very, very welcoming, and because of their usual proficency with English, we could have conversations and learn about each other. DIS doesn't provide a lot of opportunities to interact with the Danes other than through class trips, but every part of your free time could be spent exploring the city and culture! |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I don't know too much about specifics, but in terms of making sure I was able to get my medications backordered so I had enough, DIS was very helpful in writing up needed documents for insurance and pharmacies, as well as giving important instruction about what medications are available in Denmark. |
| * Safety: |
Incredibly, incredibly safe. Obviously some places are nicer than others at night, but young people are everywhere and are always willing to help you out. Train stations are very brightly lit, as well as streets. |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I loved this program at the end of the day. I made amazing friends, got to go on great trips funded by DIS, and absolutely loved the city and all it offered. |
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
| Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | Probably around 200 to 300 dollars. |
| Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Definitely meal planning and making sure that if you go out to eat/drink, you're able to budget with conversion rates and such. |
Language
| * Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |

|
| * What could be improved? |
|
| * What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I wish I had known that it was okay to not be friends with the first people that I met, and wish I could have branched out to new people earlier. |
