Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

While the classes were academically rigorous enough that I felt engaged and challenged, they were not hard to the point of discouragement at any point. The class schedule was structured such that Wednesdays were off unless you had a field study (basically a field trip or special seminar), and weekends were free. Many of my friends also did not have classes some days due to their specific schedule. Overall, I felt that academics were a large part of my experience, but they did not take over my experience to the point where I felt like I lacked the opportunity to do things outside of school.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Truly incredible. DIS was extremely helpful in figuring out my medical treatments (I get infusions) and accommodations, and it was extremely easy. I received as much assistance as I needed, and everything ran very smoothly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My housing was kind of out of the way, but we were supplied transit passes. It was just unfortunate how far of a walk it was to get to class.

* Food:

The food was good!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I think I would have felt a bit more integrated if I had more exposure to Danes, and probably if I lived more centrally or closer to places to hang out outside of my dorm.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

DIS was truly incredible with healthcare facilitation. The program was as helpful as they could be. Compared to the US healthcare system, the DK system has definete pros and cons; the main con I experienced was that it is hard to get in to see a specialist if needed, and doctors do not tend to prescribe for prevention. The system is incredibly efficient for normal things, for instance I sprained my ankle and they had me go to the hospital, receive x-rays to ensure no break, and then sent me home with a brace all in under 3 hours and for free. On the other hand, I have chronic illnesses, one of which was flaring before and during the program, and the PCP I was assigned was not very helpful with it; they wanted me to get in to see a dermatologist which was impossible in the time frame. Additionally, I have EXTREMELY bad seasonal allergies, and I went to the hospital and to the PCP probably 4 times before resorting to a private provider who prescribed a steroid inhaler and such immediately. It was expensive, but still MUCHHH cheaper than in the US. DIS supported me throughout the process, and some of my professors helped to make phone calls when I couldn't understand the Danish phone tree. Overall, I truly think that this is an ideal program for someone with chronic illnesses.

* Safety:

I have never felt so safe in my life.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I wish I could do it again!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is super expensive. That said, the program provides a grocery voucher, as well as basically any kitchen supply you could need (excluding air fryer, which I was able to get for about $40). There are some places to get hygiene products at a pretty cheap price. I think it is survivable, but it would be hard to get away with not spending much. The cost of dining out is also extremely expensive.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Not really outside of classes.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Flashcards, practicing dialogues, and finding a local to speak with

Comments: It was absolutely incredible. 100/10. Easily the best class I have ever taken. It was challenging, but not hard. The class absolutely made use of the location in central Copenhagen, and our core course trip was to Amsterdam where the location was used to the optimal value. The teacher was exceedingly knowledgable, but also interested in learning more. I LOVED every second of the class. We had a few short papers (reflections) but they were all secondary to the two group projects we did; a campaign and a podcast. Also my teacher made it clear that there may be some troubling topics, and made themselves extremely available as a resource.
